We’re cleaning up our business operations.

We’re making everything we do better, more congruent, quicker, shinier, and neater.

This might mean that we’ll be gone for a while while we serve our customers: we know, and we’re fine with that.

This site will be moved over and made live at http://flatratebiz.com shortly.  The only product we’re now selling is our website packages and website boosting packages.

And training.

But instead of making our changes incrementally, we’ve put the brakes on that for a week or so and we’ll be up and live and “in effect” shortly.

So stay tuned.

Mars Edit 3.0: Mac Blogging Software Review

I switched to the mac almost 2 years ago.  I never looked back, except when it came to blogging software.  I tried Ecto, I used MacJournal (and hated it), and I genuinely missed the crown jewel of Microsoft: Windows Live Writer.  I wanted something easy, and useful. Phil Hodgen said he really liked Mars Edit. [...]

Building Your Community Part I: Your Core

Thumbnail image for Building Your Community Part I: Your Core

In my community post, I shared the building blocks of community creation.  The gist was recruit a small group of 5-12 people, then recruit a group of 10-50 people as your ‘tribe/community/whatever.’  It got even the great Tamar saying nice things about it.  But the ‘how to’ portion for each step was a little lacking. [...]

Murder Your Anti-Marketing

One of the concepts that I’ve been in love with is the idea of anti-marketing. That is the little, cringe-inducing details that cause people to abandon your shopping cart, wander off mystified or confused. Anti-marketing kills conversions, and it’s anything that makes the buyer lose trust in you that is completely under your control. It’s [...]

Your job is the same as my job.  Your job is to clearly communicate why it’s different over there.  Why your company is the best tax preparer, attorney, realtor, etc. on the planet.  Showing people what it means to be an expert and sharing expertise will help you to earn money.  You have to share [...]

Sticking To the Knitting: Changes at Flat Rate

When I created Flat Rate Web Jobs, I wanted to be a boutique, full service shop that offered websites, some copy-writing services, some SEO and some other things to my customers.  I had a vision of being a partner shop, a one stop shop for all of small business.  I thought the small business vertical [...]

22 Killer (and fast) Sources of Freelance Business (Right Under Your Nose)

Freelancers all want clients.  Freelancers all want new clients.  A steady source of clients and people to help would be good.  It’s simple, but not simplistic. I hear  it all the time from other freelancers: I wish I could get clients….or even “My clients suck.”  I hear the people whining at FreelanceSwitch and FreelanceFolder.  There [...]

The Mushy Middle

The Mushy Middle sucks.  It’s a site that doesn’t quite do the job that it’s supposed to do: persuade your customers to take the next step.  You are in the mushy middle if you’re trying to be all things to all people and don’t have a disciplined Internet strategy.  You’re in the mushy middle if [...]

The Cobbler’s Kids Go Unshod

Getting slammed with new business, orders and even enhancements is exciting, but it’s cost us a good bit of the forward progress on the blog.  Now that there’s a lull in what’s happening, we’re going to reflect on how to keep that from recurring.  We’ve not updated, we’ve not done what we preach. Now–I never [...]
